What Does “Bespoke” Actually Mean?
The term originates from Savile Row, London’s legendary tailoring district. When a cloth was “spoken for” — selected from the bolt by a specific client and set aside for their commission — it was said to have been “bespoken.” Over centuries, the word came to define the full process: a garment created entirely from scratch, for one client, with an original paper pattern drafted specifically for that individual’s body.
That pattern lives in the tailor’s archive. It belongs to the client. No one else’s suit is cut from it.
The Three Categories of Men’s Tailoring
Understanding bespoke requires knowing what it’s contrasted against:
Off-the-rack (ready-to-wear): Manufactured in standardized sizes — 40 Regular, 42 Long — based on statistical body averages. The garment is designed for no one specifically and therefore fits almost no one perfectly. Alterations can improve the fit, but the structural geometry of the garment cannot be fundamentally changed.
Made-to-measure: A step above off-the-rack. The tailor takes your measurements — chest, waist, seat, sleeve length — and uses those figures to adjust an existing pattern template. The template may be modified, but it is not created from scratch. The result is a garment that fits better than off-the-rack but is still constrained by the original pattern’s geometry.
Bespoke: The original pattern is drafted from your body — not from a template. Your measurements are one input among several. The tailor also assesses your posture, your body’s structural asymmetries, the way you carry your shoulders, how your back curves. The pattern is built around who you are, not who the average is.
What Most Atlanta “Custom” Shops Are Actually Offering
This is the part most tailors won’t say out loud.
The majority of what is sold as “custom” or “bespoke” in Atlanta — and across the United States — is made-to-measure. The language is often interchangeable in marketing, but the process is not. You’ll meet with a sales associate, take your measurements, select a fabric from a book of swatches, choose lapel width and button count from a menu of options, and receive a garment that has been adjusted from a base pattern.
That is a legitimate service with genuine value. But it is not bespoke.
The distinction matters for one central reason: measurements alone cannot capture the complexity of a human body. A man who is 42 chest and 32 waist might have a right shoulder that sits higher than his left, a forward head posture that affects how a collar sits, a silhouette that carries weight differently than the mathematical measurements suggest. A made-to-measure pattern will not account for these variables. A bespoke pattern, drafted by an experienced tailor who has assessed your body rather than simply measured it, will.

We assess posture, shoulder slope, the length of your torso relative to your legs, the way your back curves, any asymmetry in your frame. These observations inform the pattern we draft — an original document created specifically for your body and kept in our archive for the life of our relationship.
Your measurements are recorded, of course. But they are a confirmation, not a starting point.
This methodology — body-shape-based pattern drafting — is how Saint Marc has operated since 1978. It is also why our clients’ suits look different from what you see coming out of most Atlanta shops. The shoulder sits where your shoulder actually is. The chest doesn’t pull. The back hangs cleanly regardless of how you move. These are not small differences.
What the Bespoke Process Looks Like
First Consultation
We meet in person — at your office, your home, or our studio. We discuss how you live in a suit: where you wear it, how long you wear it, what you need it to do. We observe and measure your body. We select cloth together from our curated bolt inventory or from mill samples.
Pattern Drafting
An original pattern is drafted for your body. This is a skilled technical process that draws on decades of experience — there is no software shortcut that replaces it.
Final Fitting and Completion
After 47 years of refining our craft, we’ve reached a level of precision where most of our clients go straight from pattern drafting to a finished garment. A separate baste fitting is no longer necessary for the majority of commissions — our body-shape assessment and pattern-drafting methodology has become that accurate.
For clients commissioning in especially sensitive fabrics — a cashmere-silk blend, for example, or a garment requiring extensive handwork — we may add a baste fitting to ensure the cloth behaves exactly as intended. These are typically our highest-tier commissions, beginning at $5,000.
For most clients, the process is: consultation, pattern drafting, final fitting, completion. If any adjustments are needed at the final fitting, they are included at no additional cost. There are no surprise alteration fees. The suit is right, or we make it right.
Your pattern is archived after completion. Future commissions begin from this foundation, which shortens the process and improves the result with each suit.
